Chantal Backman

Chantal Backman is a Full Professor and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Ottawa. She holds affiliations with several research institutions, including ICES as a Fellow in the Life Stage Research Program (2022–present), Senior Scientist at the Institut du Savoir Montfort (2024–present), Affiliate Investigator in Methodological and Implementation Research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (2015–present), and Affiliate Investigator in the Care of the Elderly Program at the Bruyère Research Institute (2017–present).

Her educational background includes a PhD in Nursing from the University of Alberta (2011), a Master of Health Administration from the University of Ottawa (2000), and a BSc in Nursing from the University of Ottawa (1997).

Her research focuses on improving healthcare for older adults, particularly in minority language populations. Key areas include enhancing care quality and safety for frail older adults, nursing’s role in optimizing care, care transitions between healthcare settings, and digital health applications to improve safety. She leads the Innovations in Care for older Adults REsearch centre (i-CARE).

Recent publications explore topics such as reversing frailty, care transitions, and digital health interventions for older adults. Her work includes studies on pandemic impacts on hospitalized patients and frameworks for sustaining healthcare innovations.

She has been recognized as an ICES Fellow (Life Stage Research Program, 2022–present). Professor Backman actively supervises graduate students and is involved in grant-funded research to advance geriatric care and healthcare innovations. She leads the i-CARE research centre, dedicated to improving geriatric care through research and innovation.
