Catherine Woodward

Dr. Catherine Woodward is Teaching Faculty III in the Botany Department at UW-Madison. She teaches interdisciplinary courses including Rainforests & Coral Reefs, Conservation Biology, Tropical Ecosystems, and Dendrology. Her pedagogical approach emphasizes experiential learning and connection between human well-being and ecosystem conservation.

Research examines tropical conservation strategies, habitat fragmentation impacts, and community-based conservation incentives. Fieldwork focuses on Ecuadorian ecosystems through the Ceiba Foundation, which she co-founded to link habitat protection with sustainable livelihoods.

Conservation work includes establishing 500,000+ acres of protected areas in coastal Ecuador through Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas. Leads the Tropical Conservation Semester field program in Andes, Amazon, and Galapagos ecosystems.
