Carolyn Abbot is a Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Faculty of Law. Formerly a Lecturer in Law at Manchester and at Lancashire Law School, she holds an LLB and PhD from the University of Manchester.

Research Interests: Her work focuses on environmental regulation, NGO legal strategies, public participation mechanisms, and regulatory enforcement. Current projects include collaboration with Maria Lee (UCL) on post-Brexit environmental law and public participation, and with Gary Lynch-Wood on transnational environmental crimes. She also advises UN Expert Groups on pollution crime legislation.
Teaching: Course director for Concepts in Environmental Law (PLAN60441) and Environmental Law (LAWS30102), plus Contract Law.
Policy Contributions: Influenced UK and EU regulatory debates through Defra-funded projects on compliance, civil sanctions, and criminal penalties. Authored reports on statutory enforcement notices and contributed to regulatory justice consultations.
