Carl Vincent

Dr Carl Vincent is an Academic Manager and Principal Lecturer in Classical Music at the School of Music and Education, teaching modules in Performance, Harmony and Analysis, Critical Listening, and Composition. His research focuses on film musicology, particularly the works of Miklós Rózsa and Italian 20th-century composers like Alfredo Casella, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, and Nino Rota. He has presented papers at institutions such as Trinity College Dublin, The Sibelius Academy, and the Italian Musicological Conference, and his compositions have been performed internationally.

His research explores extra-opus intertextuality in film scores, with published works including prefaces for Musikproduktion Höflich and a chapter on Nino Rota in the Routledge volume Double Lives: Film Composers in the Concert Hall (2019). He has also authored liner notes for Naxos label CDs, including Nino Rota Solo Piano Music Volume 1 (2019).

Carl has composed works such as Let Not the Poet's Soul Be Frozen, A Night at the Movies, and Trombone Concerto, with performances in Lisbon, London, Belfast, Sydney, and Adelaide. Current projects include a song cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano based on Veronica Franco's writings. His career highlights include commissions for the Black Dyke Band and the European Brass Band Championship 2006.
