About
Prof. C.H. van der Wal is a Professor in Physics of Quantum Devices at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials. He holds a PhD from Delft University of Technology (2001, Cum Laude) and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University. His research focuses on quantum coherent dynamics in semiconductor devices, including spintronics and quantum information functionalities using electron and nuclear spins. He has held roles such as Scientific Director of the Zernike Institute (2016–2022) and chairs the Institute Advisory Council at AMOLF.
Key achievements include ERC Starting Grant (2011), NWO-Vidi Grant (2005), and teaching awards for his contributions to the Nanoscience Top Master program. His work bridges quantum optics, semiconductor physics, and nanotechnology, with applications in quantum information and spintronics. Current research explores novel materials like SiC and 2D systems for quantum technologies.
