Burleigh Hendrickson is an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the College of the Liberal Arts. He specializes in French Empire studies, decolonization, and transnational history with a focus on the Maghreb and West Africa. His research examines postcolonial relationships between France and its former colonies, particularly during the global protests of 1968. He holds a Ph.D. in World History from Northeastern University (2014), an M.A. from Portland State University (2006), and a B.A. from UNC Chapel Hill (2001).
His research interests include decolonial/postcolonial studies, transnational activism, and the intersections of dignity with human rights. Key works include his award-winning book *Decolonizing 1968: Transnational Student Activism in Tunis, Paris, and Dakar* (Cornell UP, 2022), which received the 2023 Alf Andrew Heggoy Prize. He has held Mellon fellowships and Fulbright awards, including a recent Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for his upcoming project on dignity's historical trajectories.
His publications span historical analysis of student movements, postcolonial Tunisian networks, and global Francophone intellectual history. Current research explores dignity's role in resistance movements from the Enlightenment to the Arab Spring. He teaches courses on French culture, protest culture, and dignity's political dimensions in the Francophone world.
