Burkhard Henke

Burkhard Henke is a Chair and Professor of German Studies at Davidson College. He has been a faculty member since 1993, serving as department chair and director of the Humanities program as the E. Craig Wall, Jr. Distinguished Teaching Professor. His expertise spans eighteenth-century German literature, second language acquisition, and educational technology.

Henke’s scholarly work focuses on intersections of technology, memory, and identity in Uwe Johnson’s tetralogy Anniversaries. He has co-edited two notable publications: Unwrapping Goethe’s Weimar (1999) and Berliner Platz 1 (2007). As an advocate for German education, he contributes to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and currently serves as Chief Reader for the College Board's AP German Language and Culture exam.

His awards include the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award and the AATG/Goethe-Institut’s National Certificate of Merit for advancing German education in the U.S. Henke remains active on the Goethe Society of North America board.
