Bruno Raetsch

Bruno Raetsch is a Professor of Sculpture at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, where he has taught since 2009. Previously, he served as Dean of the Art Department from 2010 to 2018. His academic career also includes heading the wood sculpture class at the Schneeberg Applied Arts Department from 2002 to 2006.

Raetsch's artistic practice centers on sculpture, particularly wooden works created with chainsaw techniques that emphasize direct engagement with the material. His research interests span figurative art, spatial installations, and conceptual explorations of home, identity, and the tension between peace and war. Notable exhibitions include "Westwörld" which examined the ambivalence of homeland concepts through symbolic sculptures.

Raetsch's work methodology rejects preparatory sketches, favoring direct engagement with materials to capture the "core" of his vision before rational control intervenes. His pieces often feature confrontational imagery that juxtaposes themes of violence and peace, destruction and creation. Recent exhibitions at BURG demonstrate his continued active presence in the contemporary art scene through 2025-2026.
