Brooks Winfree

Brooks Winfree is an Assistant Professor (fixed term) at Michigan State University, specializing in slavery and Native American history. He serves as faculty advisor for the undergraduate History Club. His research focuses on reorienting understandings of Texas slavery through frameworks of labor, family dynamics, violence, and resistance, as detailed in his book project Black in Native Texas: Slavery and Settler Colonialism, 1821–1865.

Education: PhD in United States History from the University of Texas at Austin (2021).

Teaching areas include U.S. History to 1876, the U.S. West, Indigenous history, and labor history. Office hours are Tuesdays 12–2 p.m. or by appointment.
