Brooke Bauer is an Associate Professor of American History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, specializing in Native American and colonial American history with focus on Southeastern tribes. She is an enrolled citizen of the Catawba Nation.
Her research examines Catawba women's roles in nation-building, economic resilience, and cultural preservation from 1540-1840. Bauer analyzes how matrilineal systems shaped political, social, and economic relationships within Native communities confronting colonialism.
Prior to joining UTK, Bauer taught at the University of South Carolina Lancaster, offering courses on Indigenous histories, women's studies, and material culture. Her forthcoming book analyzes continuities in Catawba identity through women's experiences.
