Brian Walters

Brian Walters is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and affiliated with the Program in Translation and Interpreting Studies and the Program in Medieval Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a B.A. from the University of Missouri (1998), M.A. from the University of Kansas (2003), and Ph.D. from UCLA (2011). His research focuses on Latin literature, especially Cicero and the late Roman Republic, with expertise in classical reception and translation studies.

Walters' work examines political discourse in Ciceronian Rome, metaphorical language in ancient texts, and classical translation. Notable publications include The Deaths of the Republic (Oxford, 2020) and translations of Lucan's Civil War and Virgil's Georgics. He teaches courses on Roman civilization, material culture, and Neronian literature.

Current projects include a book on Cicero's poetry and translations of Lucretius' Nature of Things. His interdisciplinary affiliations bridge classical studies with medieval and translation studies programs.
