He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (1990), an MPhil from Cambridge University (1981), and a BA from Vassar College (1980). Bauer directs the Andean Archaeology Research Group and has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Cuzco region of Peru, including excavations at Espíritu Pampa and the Islands of the Sun and Moon in Lake Titicaca.
His research emphasizes the interplay between ritual landscapes, imperial expansion, and environmental adaptation. Key projects include the analysis of Wari material culture, Inca pilgrimage routes, and the socio-political dynamics of the Chanka people. Bauer's work bridges archaeology with ethnohistory, using interdisciplinary methods to reconstruct Andean cultural evolution.
He has secured grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and other institutions. His contributions include over 100 publications on topics ranging from Wari state influence to Inca astronomy and the archaeology of sacred sites. Bauer is also involved in conservation efforts and public outreach to preserve Andean cultural heritage.
Bauer's teaching and mentorship focus on training future archaeologists in field methods, environmental archaeology, and the ethical stewardship of cultural resources. His research team actively collaborates with local communities in Peru to ensure inclusive archaeological practice.
