Brian Michael Draper is a Conjoint Professor at the School of Psychiatry, UNSW, and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Older Persons Mental Health Service, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service. He holds an honorary Senior Research Fellowship at Neurosciences Research Australia. His clinical research focuses on mental health problems in older adults, with specialization in dementia (including young-onset and acute hospital presentations), cognitive disorders in Aboriginal Australians, behavioral symptoms of dementia, carer stress, and mild cognitive impairment.
Research interests span dementia management, depression and suicidal behavior in late life, end-of-life care ethics, and drug/alcohol issues in aging populations. Collaborations include institutions across Australia (Flinders University, Griffith University, University of Sydney) and international partnerships. Draper investigates physical healthcare comorbidities, self-harm in dementia, and historical aspects of dementia care in Australia.
Professional activities include membership in WHO Consultation Groups for ICD-11 revision, Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel for Alzheimer's Disease International, and editorial roles for suicide research journals. He has chaired national committees including the Psychogeriatric Care Expert Reference Group and Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age (RANZCP).
Education includes MB BS and MD degrees from UNSW, with fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP).
