About
Brian K Horton is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and a Research Professor at the Institute for Geophysics, both within the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds the J. Nalle Gregory Chair in Sedimentary Geology and the J. Nalle Gregory Regents Professorship in Geological Sciences. His research focuses on sedimentary basin development, mountain building processes, and the integration of geochronology, structural geology, and geochemistry to understand orogenesis and sediment provenance.
Education: Ph.D., University of Arizona; M.S., Montana State University; B.S., University of New Mexico.
Research interests include modern and ancient nonmarine depositional systems, dynamics of sedimentary basins and orogenic systems, sediment provenance, and tectonic-climatic interactions in thrust belts and foreland basins. His work spans regions such as the Andes, South America, the Middle East (Zagros), Central Asia (Tibetan Plateau), and western North America (Rocky Mountains).
Awards: J. Nalle Gregory Chair in Sedimentary Geology, J. Nalle Gregory Regents Professorship in Geological Sciences.
Advising and Grants: Brian mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, focusing on projects in South America, the Middle East, and Central Asia. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and other institutions.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Institute for Geophysics and collaborates with international teams on basin analysis and tectonic studies.
