Brendan Shanahan

Brendan Shanahan is Lecturer in History at Yale University and Associate Research Scholar with the Committee on Canadian Studies at Yale's MacMillan Center. His research examines North American political and legal history through comparative frameworks.

Research specialization includes:

• Comparative U.S.-Canadian immigration and citizenship policy
• Legal constructions of nationality and alien status
• Historical development of immigration restrictions
• Transnational Catholic community history

Publications analyze historical disputes over Catholic education systems and discrimination against immigrant educators. Forthcoming monograph Disparate Regimes (Oxford University Press) examines state-level immigration policy variations from 1865-1965.

Teaches courses on North American immigration history and comparative legal systems at undergraduate and graduate levels.
