Jay Gitlin

Jay Gitlin is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Yale University and Associate Director of the Howard R. Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers & Borders. He holds a BA, MM, and PhD from Yale University. His research focuses on French colonial history in North America, urban and suburban development, and cultural studies. Gitlin has authored or edited influential works including The Bourgeois Frontier (2010), Country Acres and Cul-de-sacs (2018), and a 2021 special issue on Créolité in Quebec Studies.

His teaching includes courses on Yale’s history, Quebec-Canada relations, and urban studies. He coordinates the MacMillan Center’s Canadian Studies program and contributes to Urban Studies initiatives. Gitlin’s work has earned accolades such as the Alf Andrew Heggoy Prize for colonial history. Current projects explore comparative French and Latin quarters in global contexts.
