Dr. Brandon Reeder is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the University of Essex, affiliated with the School of Life Sciences. His academic support hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and he is located in room 3SW.6.15 on the Colchester Campus. He holds a PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Essex (1998), an MSc (1994), and a BSc (1993) in Biological and Medicinal Chemistry from the same institution.
Dr. Reeder’s research focuses on hemoglobin and myoglobin biochemistry, oxidative stress mechanisms, and the development of hemoglobin-based blood substitutes. His work addresses protein engineering, redox chemistry, and the pathophysiological consequences of hemoprotein dysfunction. Notable contributions include studies on nitric oxide interaction, ferryl heme regulation, and lipid signaling.
His scientific achievements include a Senior Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy and an h-index of 32 with over 4,200 citations. Current research is supported by grants from the BBSRC and MRC, focusing on projects such as haem-protein cross-linked respiratory proteins and tyrosine radical formation.
- Grants: Multiple BBSRC/MRC-funded projects (e.g., 2008–2020)
- Labs: Active research group with current students and visiting scientists
- Future Work: Expanding studies on globin engineering and oxidative stress mitigation
