About
George B. Richter-Addo is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. He holds the dual titles of George Lynn Cross Research Professor and President's Associates Presidential Professor. His research focuses on the biological inorganic chemistry of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particularly their interactions with iron-containing heme proteins like myoglobin and hemoglobin. He leads the Richter-Addo Lab, part of the Price Family Foundation Institute of Structural Biology, located in the Stephenson Life Sciences Research Center (SLSRC).
Education:
- B.S. & Dip-Ed, 1982, University of Cape Coast, Ghana
- Ph.D., 1988, University of British Columbia, Canada
- Postdoctoral Fellowships: University of Alberta (1988–1989), University of British Columbia (1989–1991), University of Utah (1992–1993)
Research Interests:
His work combines synthetic inorganic chemistry, protein biochemistry, and structural biology to study how iron centers in heme proteins mediate the physiological effects of NOx. Techniques include:
- Spectroelectrochemistry for redox behavior analysis
- Protein crystallography for structural characterization
- Molecular biology/mutagenesis for functional studies
- Computational modeling (e.g., density-functional theory)
Awards:
- George Lynn Cross Research Professor (2017)
- President's Associates Presidential Professor (2000)
Labs & Affiliations:
The Richter-Addo Lab focuses on interdisciplinary research at the Stephenson Life Sciences Research Center. Collaborative projects involve structural biology, chemical biology, and medicinal chemistry. The lab engages with advanced instrumentation for NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and electrochemical analysis.
