About
Dr. Bonnie Quigley is a Lecturer in Trauma and Translational Research at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) within the Thompson Institute's Mental Health and Neuroscience program. She leads the Molecular Biology research program at the National PTSD Research Centre. Her work focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying PTSD, including genetic, epigenetic, and biomarker studies. Bonnie holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Queen’s University (Canada), an MSc from the University of Saskatchewan, and a BSc (Honors) in Medical Microbiology.
Her research interests include immune dysregulation, circulating biomarkers, gut-brain axis interactions, and genetic/epigenetic factors in mental health. She teaches courses on Stress-related Disorders and supervises postgraduate students. Bonnie is a Superstar of STEM (2024 & 2025-2026), recognized for promoting women in STEM, and has received awards such as the Christopher Knapper Teaching Award (2005-2006) and the International Society for Extremophiles Award (2004).
Her lab explores molecular pathways in PTSD, with recent studies on ketamine treatment and BDNF protein dynamics. She advocates for integrative approaches linking biological and psychological factors in mental health. Bonnie is also affiliated with the Centre for Bioinnovation and contributes to community STEM outreach programs.
