About
Berislav V Zlokovic is the Chair and University Professor of Physiology & Neuroscience at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, holding the Mary Hayley and Selim Zilkha Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease Research. He is Director of the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute and leads the Department of Physiology & Neuroscience. His work focuses on the blood-brain barrier (BBB), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and stroke, with contributions to understanding BBB dysfunction’s role in neurodegeneration. He has pioneered research on BBB cellular pathways, gene therapy, and imaging techniques, leading to clinical trials for AD and stroke.
Zlokovic’s research interests include BBB biology, AD pathogenesis, stroke mechanisms, and biomarkers. He studies APOE4’s impact on cerebrovascular systems and develops therapies using iPSC-derived cells and APC analogs. His work spans transgenic models, human studies, and translational research.
His awards include the Potamkin Prize, Javits Award, and recognition as a 'Highly Cited Researcher' for 21 consecutive years. He co-founded ZZ Biotech to advance neurological treatments and serves as a Nobel Prize nominator. His lab integrates molecular, cellular, and translational approaches to address BBB-related disorders.
