About
Benoît Roux is the Amgen Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Professor of Neuroscience Institute at the University of Chicago. He joined the University of Chicago faculty in 2006 and has established himself as a leading researcher in computational biophysics and theoretical chemistry.
Dr. Roux's research focuses on applying theoretical and computational methods to understand the structure, dynamics, and function of biological systems at the atomic level. His work centers on molecular dynamics simulations to study ion channels, biomolecular systems, and develop new computational approaches including polarizable force fields and efficient sampling methods. His research has significant implications for understanding fundamental biological processes and developing new therapeutic approaches.
His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on computational biophysics, with particular emphasis on ion channel function, molecular dynamics methodology development, and applications to complex biological systems. He has made significant contributions to the field of biomolecular simulations and computational electrophysiology.
Dr. Roux was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2023 for distinguished contributions to the field of biophysics, with ground-breaking theoretical and computational work that have served to establish the physical principles governing the function of biological macromolecules.
His research is supported by multiple NIH grants, including R35GM152124 (Molecular dynamics studies of K+ and Na+ channels and biomembranes based on a polarizable force field, 2024-2029), S10OD028655 (Beagle-3: A Shared GPU Cluster for Biomolecular Sciences, 2020-2021), and R01GM072558 (Polarizable Force Field for Proteins and Lipids, 2005-2025). His laboratory continues to be at the forefront of computational biophysics research.
