
About
Dr Benjamin Saunders is a Senior Lecturer in Health Research at Keele University’s School of Medicine, affiliated with the Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences. His work focuses on qualitative methods in healthcare, particularly improving care for long-term conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), musculoskeletal pain, and young people’s mental health. He holds roles such as Deputy Lead of the Keele Centre for Musculoskeletal Health Research and Co-Editor of the International Journal of Social Research Methodology.
Education: Completed his PhD at Cardiff University (2012) exploring young adults’ experiences of living with long-term conditions, including IBD and Type 1 diabetes. Prior experience includes research at the University of York’s Coma and Disorders of Consciousness Research Centre.
Research Interests
Dr Saunders investigates healthcare delivery improvements, particularly through qualitative studies on stoma care, self-harm management, and musculoskeletal pain. His current projects include SPCR-funded studies on stoma distress in youth and musculoskeletal pain in children (CAM-Pain). He also leads NIHR-funded trials addressing shoulder pain (PANDA-S) and vocational advice (WAVE).
Publications & Awards
Over 60 peer-reviewed articles across healthcare research, qualitative methodologies, and clinical trials. Recognized as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Serves on advisory boards for NIHR Open Research and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
Teaching & Mentorship
Supervises PhD students in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, self-harm management, and tennis elbow treatment. Leads the Research Methods module in Keele’s postgraduate Health Sciences programs. Active in advancing teaching methodologies through HEA roles.
