Beatriz da Costa

Beatriz da Costa is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), affiliated with the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Her work bridges contemporary art, science, engineering, and politics, focusing on interdisciplinary practices such as public participatory interventions, locative media, and critical writing. She explores themes like environmental sustainability, transgenic organisms, and the societal impacts of surveillance technologies. Da Costa holds an MFA from the Ecole d'Art d'Aix-en-Provence and a Ph.D. from UCI.

Research & Projects: Da Costa investigates the role of art in technoscientific discourse, co-editing the anthology Tactical Biopolitics (MIT Press, 2008). As co-founder of Preemptive Media, she merges art, activism, and technology. Her projects address social injustice through emergent technologies and advocate for responsible natural resource use via interspecies collaboration.
