Helmholtz Centre for Environmental ResearchAbout
Dr. Beatrice Engelmann is a Research Fellow in the Functional Metabolomics group at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany. She specializes in metabolomics and proteomics to study the effects of environmental contaminants on adipocyte differentiation and metabolic pathways. Her work focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of xenobiotic exposure, particularly regarding endocrine disruptors like DINCH and plastic additives.
Engelmann holds a PhD in Functional Genomics from the University of Greifswald (2017) and a Diploma in Biochemistry from the University of Greifswald (2013). She has conducted postdoctoral research at the University Medicine Greifswald (2017–2018) and the UFZ (2018–present). Her research integrates multi-omics approaches to investigate how environmental chemicals impact metabolic and epigenetic processes in human and model systems.
Key areas of expertise include:
- Adipocyte biology and differentiation
- Environmental toxicology of plastic additives
- Proteomics and metabolomics methodology development
- Impact of xenobiotics on microbiota and host metabolism
Her recent publications highlight studies on DINCH-induced metabolic disruption, post-translational modifications in adipogenesis, and the effects of glyphosate on microbial communities. Engelmann collaborates widely, contributing to projects like the EU-funded MetaPro initiative and the Proxies of the Eco-exposome PhD College.
Laboratory affiliations include the Molecular Toxicology Team under Prof. Martin von Bergen, with access to state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and metabolomics infrastructure.
