Bas Overvelde

Bas Overvelde is an Associate Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology and the Principal Investigator of the Soft Robotic Matter Group at AMOLF, an academic research institute in Amsterdam. He works one day per week at TU/e as part of the Dynamics and Control Department and the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems. His research bridges fundamental mechanics and dynamics with applications in soft robotics and metamaterials.

Overvelde's research interests focus on embodying autonomous behavior in soft materials through nonlinear phenomena. His group explores systems like soft robotic hearts, self-sensing grippers for delicate handling, and adaptive architectural facades. This work leverages dynamic interactions and environmental feedback, offering alternatives to centralized AI systems.

His educational background includes a BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering (cum laude) from Delft University of Technology and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, where he studied compliance and instabilities in engineered materials under Katia Bertoldi.

Overvelde's team includes PhD students Alberto Comoretto, Paul Ducarme, Bob Huisman, Elif Kurt, Sergio Picella, Nienke Reitsma, Katrien van Riet, Mannus Schomaker, Maziar Arfaee (Guest), and Lio Huntjens (Visiting). His collaborations span academic and industrial partners in nanolithography and advanced materials.
