Australian National University (ANU)About
Barry Pogson is a Professor in the Division of Plant Sciences at the Australian National University (ANU). He holds leadership roles as Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology and lead CI of an International Wheat Yield Partnership grant. His research focuses on chloroplast retrograde signaling, carotenoid biosynthesis, drought tolerance, and optimizing energy use efficiency in crops. Pogson has a PhD from Macquarie University and extensive postdoctoral experience in the US before joining ANU in 1999.
Research interests include chloroplast-nuclear communication during stress, carotenoid-derived signaling molecules, systemic acquired acclimation in plants, and translational approaches to improve crop resilience. Key projects involve developing drought-tolerant wheat and enhancing energy use efficiency through molecular and biochemical techniques.
- Notable awards: Eureka Prize, Fenner Medal, Goldacre Award, multiple supervision accolades
- Grants include ARC Centre of Excellence and IWYP funding
- Labs collaborate with CSIRO and international nodes of the ARC Centre
His team has mentored numerous award-winning students and researchers, contributing to impactful discoveries in plant stress biology and crop improvement.
