About
Dr. Andrew Bowerman is a Research Fellow at the Division of Plant Sciences within the Research School of Biology at The Australian National University (ANU). His research focuses on plant energetics, carbohydrate biochemistry, and abiotic stress responses in wheat, particularly heat and drought tolerance. He serves as a Chief Investigator on a GRDC-funded project investigating heat tolerance of photosynthesis and respiration in wheat, alongside collaborators from USyd, UNE, UWA, and InterGrain.
Education:
- PhD in Plant Sciences from ANU (supervised by Professor Barry Pogson)
- BAppSc in Medical and Applied Biotechnology with Honours from Charles Sturt University (Charles Sturt University, supervised by Professor Todd Walker and Dr. Wouter Kalle)
Research interests:
- Yield and energy use efficiency in wheat
- Wheat genetics and starch biochemistry
- Grain germination, early growth, and establishment
- Abiotic stress responses, especially temperature and drought.
His recent publications explore environmental data integration, genotype-environment interactions in wheat respiration, and molecular mechanisms of stress recovery. He is a member of the Pogson Group, which investigates chloroplast-to-nuclear signaling, light stress, and carotenoid roles in plant stress responses. His skills include project management, field trial design, quantitative genetics, proteomics, and statistical analysis.
