Barbara Beznec

Dr. Barbara Beznec is an Associated Member at the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM) of Humboldt University of Berlin. She holds the academic rank of Researcher at the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, where she focuses on migration-related issues across Europe. Her work spans three decades of research on post-Yugoslav migration dynamics, citizenship theories, and European border regimes.

• Education: MA in International Relations (2000) and PhD in Political Science (2016) from University of Ljubljana

Research Interests: Barbara investigates post-national citizenship, autonomy of migration, and European border policies through the lens of:

• Migration policies and practices
• Social movements and collectives
• Creolization and cultural transformation
• Western Balkans political ecology

Current Projects: Active member of the Data Matters COST Action's Management Committee, focusing on sociotechnical challenges in migration data.

Research Legacy: 15 years of publications analyzing Balkan Route dynamics, Europeanization critiques, and migrant self-organization in post-Yugoslav territories. Her work bridges political theory with empirical migration studies.
