Baba Shiv is the Sanwa Bank, Limited, Professor of Marketing at Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB). He holds a PhD from Duke University (1996), an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (1988), and a BE from College of Engineering, Guindy (1983). His research focuses on neuroeconomics, exploring how emotional and motivational neural systems influence decisions, leadership, and consumer behavior. He has authored over 30 journal articles and teaches courses like Neuroscience and the Connection to Sustained Excellence and Designing Solutions by Leveraging the Frinky Science of the Human Mind.
Shiv’s work bridges academia and industry, advising startups and Fortune 500 companies on innovation and leadership. He has directed executive programs such as The Emerging CMO: Strategic Marketing Leadership and Innovative Product Leadership. His awards include the R. Michael Shanahan Faculty Fellow (2013–14) and seven consecutive "Faculty of the Year" honors at the University of Iowa (1999–2005).
His research highlights include studies on the role of emotions in decision-making, placebo effects of marketing actions, and the interplay of 'liking' and 'wanting' systems in consumer behavior.
