About
Asrul Ismail is a Senior Research Associate in Operational Research at the School of Mathematics & Physics, University of Portsmouth. His research focuses on optimization, metaheuristics, machine learning, and their applications in autonomous systems, manufacturing logistics, and renewable energy. He holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (2021), with earlier degrees in Industrial Engineering from Bandung Institute of Technology (2009) and Gadjah Mada University (2004). His academic career began in 2005 as a Teaching Assistant in Indonesia. He joined the University of Portsmouth in 2022 for the UKRI-funded DR-SUIT project, developing UAV-USV coordination for offshore windfarm inspections. He is involved in EU Horizon 2020 projects ARC-SAR and AI-ARC, addressing Arctic security and AI-driven control systems.
Research interests span metaheuristic algorithms (e.g., Bees Algorithm variants), vehicle routing problems, and swarm intelligence applications. Key projects include optimizing wind energy feasibility in Indonesia and enhancing collision avoidance systems for UAVs. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in clean energy (SDG 7) and sustainable cities (SDG 11).
Notable collaborations include partnerships with European institutions on Arctic emergency preparedness and AI-based control rooms. His publications emphasize practical applications of optimization in logistics, renewable energy, and autonomous systems.
