Artur Markowski is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nineteenth-Century History at the Faculty of History, University of Warsaw. He has been affiliated with the university since 2007, progressing from assistant to assistant professor in 2009, and completed his habilitation in 2019. His institutional roles include serving as Secretary of the Historical Institute for didactic matters (2008–2010) and Chief Editor of the source series 'Sources on the History of Jews in Polish Lands in the 19th and 20th Centuries (until 1939)', published jointly by the Historical Institute and the POLIN Museum.
His research centers on the social history of the 19th and early 20th centuries, with a focus on Jewish communities in the Russian Empire's sphere of influence and the history of anti-Jewish violence. He explores themes such as pogroms, social representations, legal status of Jews, and cultural identity formation. His work bridges historical sociology, cultural studies, and minority history.
Markowski's recent scholarly output shows a consistent focus on Jewish history in Eastern Europe, particularly in Polish territories under partitions. His publications examine state policies, social violence, and cultural perceptions, often analyzing how rumors, legal frameworks, and imperial policies shaped Jewish life. The interdisciplinary nature of his work connects history with sociology, religious studies, and political science.
He has received prestigious scholarships and fellowships, including from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), Lanckoroński Foundation, and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. He was also a research fellow at the University of Notre Dame (2012–2013).
