Arnau Mir Torres

Arnau Mir Torres is a University Professor at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) within the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. He contributes to the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, aligning his work with the Biología Computacional y Bioinformática (BIOCOM), Modelización de Datos y Aprendizaje Estadístico (MoDAE), and Soft Computing, Image Processing and Aggregation (SCOPIA) research groups.

His academic journey began with a degree in 1987, followed by a doctoral thesis completed in 1994 at the University of Barcelona. In 1995–2006, he collaborated with CSIC Research Professor Pedro Salvador on semiconductor characterization using photoelectrochemical imaging and co-directed two doctoral theses with Excellent Cum Laude honors at UIB. Since 2006, his focus has shifted to balance indices for binary trees under evolutionary models (Yule, uniform, Ford alpha-gamma) and fuzzy techniques for medical image denoising and contour detection, co-supervising another Excellent Cum Laude thesis in July 2020.

His research spans Q1/Q2 journal articles (over 30) and conference/book chapters (over 50), with active participation in three R&D&I structures. Awards include a 2016 Sexenio de Investigación (six-year research fellowship), reflecting sustained academic contributions. Teaching roles include advanced statistics, numerical methods, and statistical learning across bachelor’s and dual-degree programs in Mathematics and Engineering.
