April C. Mattei

April C. Mattei is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at Randolph-Macon College. A Virginia native and first-generation graduate student, she earned her PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University (2016) after completing her BS in Chemistry at Randolph-Macon College (2010). Her academic journey began with undergraduate research in inorganic chemistry, which led to her doctoral work focused on magnetic nanoparticles for applications in magnetocalorics, permanent magnets, and catalysis.

Dr. Mattei’s research involves synthesizing novel metallic nanoparticles for catalytic applications in hydrogen evolution, non-rare earth permanent magnets, and antimicrobial agents. Her students have presented at national and international conferences and pursued advanced chemistry degrees. She has taught courses ranging from introductory chemistry to advanced topics like organic chemistry and nanochemistry since 2015.

Dr. Mattei is dedicated to teaching across the general chemistry curriculum, including CHEM 210, CHEM 215, and specialized courses like CHEM 390 (Introduction to Nanochemistry) and CHEM 495 (Chemistry Capstone).
