Appu Kumar Singh

Appu Kumar Singh is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His research focuses on membrane-spanning calcium ion channels (including TRP channels) and their role in physiological functions such as sensory modalities, neuronal excitability, bone formation, and apoptosis. His lab employs structural biology techniques like x-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, complemented by functional approaches including electrophysiology and mutagenesis. Notably, his collaborative study with Kirill's lab at Scripps (published in Science) resolved the molecular architecture of GPR158 and its role in depression/anxiety, alongside discoveries about auxin-cholesterol signaling in lysosomes via GPR155 (LYCHOS).
