Anne Twitty is an Associate Professor of History and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Stanford University. She holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and a B.A. from The George Washington University. Her research focuses on 19th-century U.S. legal and social history, slavery, and Confederate memorialization. Twitty’s first book, *Before Dred Scott*, examines freedom suits in the St. Louis area and their role in shaping legal culture. She is currently researching unfreedom in the 'free North' and the history of constitutional ratification.
Twitty has been active in public history initiatives, including the University of Mississippi Slavery Research Group and the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on History and Context. She co-authored a report contextualizing Confederate monuments on campus and discovered a pivotal 1906 speech about the University of Mississippi’s Confederate monument. She serves on the editorial board of the *Journal of American Constitutional History* and the Freedom Suits Memorial Foundation.
Her academic career includes prior roles at the University of Mississippi and the University of Missouri. She advises graduate students in Stanford’s History Ph.D. program, including those in the J.D./Ph.D. track in law and history.
