Kenneth Aslakson serves as an Associate Professor of History at Union College. His research explores the intersection of law and culture, focusing on African-American experiences in U.S. legal systems and the construction of racial and gender identities. His book, Making Race in the Courtroom, examines how New Orleans courts shaped racial categories in the early 19th century.
His research interests include African-American legal history, race and gender in jurisprudence, and constitutional developments in the context of slavery and civil rights. Recent publications analyze freedom suits, post-slavery litigation, and racial identity in Antebellum America.
Dr. Aslakson teaches courses on African-American history, Constitutional history, Southern history, and the Atlantic world. He holds a J.D. and Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin.
