Professor Anne Tierney is an Assistant Professor in the Learning and Teaching Academy at Heriot-Watt University. She serves as institutional theme lead for the QAA Enhancement Theme and deputy programme director for the PGCertTL. Previously, she was a lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University and a Senior University Teacher at the University of Glasgow, where she taught biology, commercialisation, and employability for 18 years. She holds a PhD from Durham University on the impacts of the Research Excellence Framework on teaching in Higher Education.
Her research focuses on Threshold Concepts in SoTL, work-related learning, and teaching strategies for large cohorts. She is Deputy Director of the Improving University Teaching conference and actively contributes to international teaching and learning conferences. She has published extensively on SoTL and delivered keynotes globally. Awards include the University of Glasgow Teaching Excellence Award.
Professionally, she edits and reviews for teaching journals, organizes academic development symposia, and advocates for pedagogical innovation. Her work emphasizes enhancing university teaching practices and fostering inclusive learning environments.
