Anne Phillips is the Graham Wallas Professor of Political Science at the London School of Economics (LSE), where she previously directed the LSE Gender Institute—one of Europe's largest centers for gender research and teaching.
Her research critically examines intersections between gender equality and cultural diversity, challenging depoliticized administrative frameworks of 'diversity management' and warning against essentialized notions of difference. Key themes include the tension between equality as sameness versus equality amid difference, the dangers of conditional equality requiring assimilation, and the necessity of integrating gender equality with cultural diversity commitments.
Major recognitions include:
- Election as Fellow of the British Academy (2003)
- Election as Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (2012)
- Honorary degrees from Aalborg University and University of Bristol
As former Director of the LSE Gender Institute, she shaped Europe's premier hub for interdisciplinary gender scholarship, influencing policy debates on migration, citizenship, and identity in transnational contexts.
