Her academic journey includes a Mag.art. from the University of Bergen (1986) and a dr. philos. from the University of Oslo (1995), focusing on French novel aesthetics and historical novels.
Her research interests span gender and aesthetics, women’s literary history, digital humanities, and Robinsonade genre studies. She leads the Female Robinsonades bibliography project and has contributed to initiatives like the BærUt! Network for digital scholarly editions. Notable projects include the Conflicts and negotiations research grant (2010–2013) examining gender in art and aesthetics.
Rønning’s work bridges historical and contemporary studies, analyzing themes such as women’s reading practices in the 18th century, transnational book history, and feminist critiques of canonical literature. Her publications explore intersections of gender, genre, and cultural transfer, often employing digital tools to map overlooked literary works.
Her articles reflect a focus on marginalized narratives, including female protagonists in survival fiction, maternal figures in literature, and the role of translation in spreading Enlightenment ideas. She collaborates across disciplines, engaging with art history, comparative literature, and empirical feminist methodologies.
