Anna Adamska

Dr. Anna Adamska is a Researcher and Affiliate Researcher in Medieval History at the Department of History and Art History, Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University. With her office located at Drift 6 in Utrecht, she has been affiliated with Utrecht University since 1997 and maintains an active research profile in medieval studies with a particular focus on East Central Europe.

Her educational background includes an MA in History (1982-1987) and a Doctorate (1988-1995) from the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland, where she also served as Assistant Professor from 1987-1996. Since then, she has participated in numerous significant research projects including the 'Pioneer Project' on the literalisation of early medieval society (1996-2003) and the 'Medieval Urban Literacy' project (2006-2009).

Dr. Adamska's research centers on medieval pragmatic literacy and communication, with special emphasis on forms and functions of charters, social history of language, and source criticism in Medieval Studies. She has made substantial contributions to understanding the cultural and socio-religious history of East Central Europe, particularly examining the region's development during the communist and post-communist periods.

Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on medieval literacy patterns, East Central European history, and the auxiliary sciences of history. The research shows evolving interest from foundational studies on medieval documentation to more complex examinations of multilingual communication, social communication systems, and the role of written culture in shaping medieval societies across East Central Europe.

Dr. Adamska serves on editorial boards including 'Studia Zródloznawcze' and 'Przeglad Historyczny,' and has participated in numerous international conferences as both organizer and presenter, reflecting her standing in the international medieval studies community.

She has supervised graduate students through the Research Master Medieval Studies program, including coordinating summer schools in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, and has taught courses on Medieval Central Europe, Investigating Medieval Sources, and Auxiliary Sciences of Medieval History at Utrecht University and other institutions across Europe.
