Prof. Marco Mostert is a Professor of Medieval History at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History. He leads research on medieval social communication, focusing on non-verbal, oral, and written forms of interaction. His work examines how communication shaped inclusion/exclusion dynamics in medieval society, particularly among marginalized groups like migrants and rural populations. He directed the 'Pionier project' on Medieval Literacy (1996-2000) and founded the Medieval Literacy Platform.
Research interests include cultural history, manuscripts, media history, Dutch history, and paleography. He explores topics like medieval libraries, text transmission, and the role of language in societal integration. His publications analyze literacy patterns, communication in early medieval Europe, and the impact of writing on social structures.
