About
Prof Angus Hunter is a Professor and Head of the Department of Sport Science at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), where he has been since October 2021. Previously, he held roles as Professor of Neuromuscular Physiology and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Stirling. His expertise spans neuromuscular physiology, sports medicine, and clinical applications, with a focus on elite athletic performance, neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis, and non-communicable diseases in South African township populations. He earned his Doctoral degree in the Physiology of Exercise from the University of Cape Town, supported by a foreign scholarship. His research bridges clinical and applied contexts, leveraging collaborations with institutions such as the Universities of Northumbria, Cape Town, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
Research Interests: Prof. Hunter investigates neuromuscular regulation in clinical and athletic populations, including motor unit recruitment strategies in neurological disorders, the impact of repetitive head trauma in sports, and interventions for muscle recovery. His work spans diagnostics (e.g., biofluid markers for concussion), training optimization (e.g., resistance protocols), and public health initiatives targeting aging populations and underserved communities. Notable projects include collaborations with sportscotland institute of sport and Innovate UK-funded talent development programs in youth soccer.
External Roles: He serves as an Expert Scientific Advisor to the UK Government’s Department of Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, and holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Stirling. His publications reflect interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare innovation, sports safety, and global health challenges.
Publications: Over 100 peer-reviewed articles since 2006, with recent contributions focusing on neuromuscular adaptation, sports-related head injuries, and sustainable aquatic food systems in Vietnam. Key themes include the neurophysiological effects of exercise, biomarker development, and translational research bridging basic science and clinical practice.
