Ang Lay Kee, Ricky

Prof. Ang Lay-Kee (Ricky) is an Associate Provost (International Relations) and the Ng Teng Fong Chair Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He holds professorial positions in both the Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) and Engineering Product Development (EPD) departments. His roles include Director of SUTD-ZJU IDEA and Programme Director of STEAMunity. He has served as Head of the SMT pillar (2018–2023) and Acting Head of EPD (2017–2019). Prof. Ang is a Fellow of IEEE, the Institute of Physics (UK), and AIIA, and has been ranked among the top 2% of global scientists in Applied Physics since 2020.

He earned his PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Plasma Physics from the University of Michigan (1999), after completing an MSc (1996) and BSc (1994) in Nuclear Engineering at National Tsinghua University, Taiwan.

His research focuses on theoretical and computational modeling of charged particles, light-matter interactions, and fractional modeling in 2D materials and plasma systems. Key areas include energy sustainability, nanophotonics, and experimental applications of electromagnetic wave propagation.

Prof. Ang has led interdisciplinary projects funded by NRF, A*STAR, and MOE, including the design of 2D electronics and cavity QED advancements. His advisory roles span international panels such as the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough jury and editorial boards of Physics of Plasmas and Nano Express. His team’s research outputs have been recognized through student awards like IEEE NPSS Fellowships and IPS poster prizes.

He maintains active collaborations through visiting roles at Tsinghua University (Distinguished Visiting Professor since 2025), Los Alamos National Lab, and the University of Michigan.
