Andrew Vowles

Dr Andrew Vowles is a Senior Research Fellow within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. His work focuses on mitigating anthropogenic impacts on freshwater environments through interdisciplinary research combining biology, ecology, and hydraulic engineering principles.

His research examines fish behavior in response to hydrodynamic conditions, light pollution, and river infrastructure. Current projects include modeling fish populations in tropical hydropower-regulated rivers and studying beaver dam impacts on Southern English fish communities.

Recent publications highlight his work on ecohydraulic fish passage criteria, gravel augmentation for chalk stream restoration, and visual cue responses in rheophilic fish species. He also contributes to teaching freshwater ecosystems and environmental impact assessment at the university.
