About
Andrew Valkenburg serves as a Lecturer at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK), where he has been integral to the Photography department since 1991. Affiliated with both full-time and part-time Bachelor Photography programs, he manages the Photography Workshop—overseeing equipment acquisition and studio maintenance—while teaching Technical Skills to students.
Graduating from The Hague's School for Photography in 1980 after moving from Friesland, Valkenburg built his career through freelance illustrative photography for magazines and posters before joining KABK. His expertise spans decades of analogue photography techniques and complex lighting setups, recently evolving to incorporate artificial intelligence applications in photographic practice.
As a workshop specialist turned educator, Valkenburg bridges technical infrastructure and pedagogy, supporting student development through hands-on studio guidance. His current work reflects a deliberate adaptation to digital advancements while maintaining foundational darkroom knowledge, positioning him as a versatile resource within the photography curriculum.
