Andrew T. Guzman serves as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Southern California (USC), a role he assumed on July 1, 2023. As the first Latinx Provost at USC, he oversees the university's academic enterprise including 18 professional schools, USC Museums, and divisions of student life, libraries, and enrollment services. Previously, he served as dean of USC's Gould School of Law from 2015 to 2023.
Guzman earned both a J.D. and Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he served as Books & Commentaries Editor for the Harvard Law Review. He completed a clerkship with Chief Judge Juan Torruella of the First Circuit Court of Appeals and is fluent in French and Spanish.
A leading scholar in international law and economics, Guzman's research spans international trade, regulatory matters, foreign direct investment, public international law, international tribunals, soft law, product safety, and climate change. His extensive publications include seven books and numerous articles, with a forthcoming work titled "Goldilocks Governance: Understanding International Soft Law".
As dean of Gould School of Law, Guzman championed diversity and inclusion, increasing BIPOC student enrollment from 36% to 50% and implementing supportive measures for LGBTQIA+ students. He oversaw a 61% application surge, reduced acceptance rates from 30% to 12%, and increased fundraising by over 40% while nearly doubling the law school's revenue through strategic financial management.
