Andrew S Berish

Andrew S Berish is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Cultural Studies at the University of South Florida. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Musicology from UCLA, and a B.A. in History from Columbia University. His research focuses on intersections between music, space/place, and race, with a specialization in jazz and American popular music of the 1930s–40s. Key works include Lonesome Roads and Streets of Dreams (2012), which examines jazz’s reflections of Depression-era geographic shifts, and recent studies on Duke Ellington and Tin Pan Alley song. Current projects explore jazz criticism and sentimentalism in pop music.
