Andrew Israel Ross

Andrew Israel Ross is the Department Chair and Associate Professor of History at Loyola University Maryland, specializing in modern France, the history of sexuality, cultural history, and women’s and gender studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and has taught at Kenyon College and the University of Southern Mississippi. His research focuses on the intersection of sexuality and urban history, particularly in 19th-century Paris. Ross authored Public City/Public Sex: Homosexuality, Prostitution, and Urban Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris (2019) and co-edited Histories of French Sexuality: From the Enlightenment to the Present (2023). He teaches courses on European history, urban history, and gender/sexuality studies. His work has been published in journals like The Journal of the History of Sexuality and French Historical Studies. Ross’s scholarship bridges social, cultural, and urban history, with a focus on marginalized groups and queer subcultures.
