Andrew Counter

Professor Andrew Counter is a faculty member at the University of Oxford, serving as Professor of Modern French Literature and Fellow and Tutor in French at New College. He holds a MA and PhD in French from the University of Cambridge.

His research explores intersections between law, politics, sexuality, and literature in France from the Revolution to the Second World War, with a focus on novels and interdisciplinary methodologies. Notable works include Inheritance in Nineteenth-Century French Culture (2010) and The Amorous Restoration (2016), which co-won the Scaglione Prize. He is currently working on Thinking Sexual Ethics through Modern French Literature.

Professor Counter has received significant recognition, including the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2013) and a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2019-2020). He co-led the AHRC-funded Art of Friendship in France research network with Dr. Nick White.

He teaches nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, emphasizing political and cultural contexts, and supervises graduate research in French literature and cultural history. His current project examines ethical dimensions of sexuality in modern French texts.

He contributes to academic governance as a member of the Advisory Board for Nineteenth-Century French Studies and Romanic Review. His work bridges literary analysis with historical and legal discourse, offering innovative insights into French cultural and intellectual history.
