Dr. Andrew Hird is an Associate Professor and Associate Head within the Department of Management at Sheffield Business School, Sheffield Hallam University. He has been in academia since 2003 after a career in industry, including marketing roles in insurance, engineering, and design, and running a successful video/audio training business. His research focuses on nascent entrepreneurship, business start-ups, opportunity identification, and entrepreneurial cognition, complemented by consultancy and business engagement activities.
He holds a PhD from the University of Hull (completed 2007) and a BA(Hons), MSc, and SFHEA accreditation. In 2024, he received an Inspirational Teaching Award. Teaching expertise spans Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Business Planning, and Consultancy, with courses taught at BA, MSc, and MBA levels since 2007.
He has supervised one PhD student (2009) and serves as an external examiner at the University of Northampton. He is also on the organizing committee of the Research into Enterprise Education SIG of the Institute for Small Business & Entrepreneurship.
